A Worked Example

Say a video call is scheduled for 3:03 PM on Friday, July 31, 2026 in Berlin, and you want to know when that is in New York:

In late July both cities are on summer time, so the gap is six hours. In January — when neither observes daylight saving — the gap is the same six hours, but the individual offsets change to UTC+01:00 and UTC−05:00.

Daylight Saving Time, Explained

Daylight saving time (DST) shifts the clock forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn to make better use of evening daylight. The key thing for conversions is that not everywhere changes on the same day, and some places never change at all.

That is why the calculator asks for a real location instead of a plain offset: only the location knows whether DST was active on the date you chose. Enter a July date and a January date between the same two cities and you may see the offsets — and sometimes the hour gap — come out differently.

Why Use Locations Instead of Fixed Offsets

A fixed offset like “UTC−05:00” is only correct for part of the year in most places. Picking New York rather than UTC−05:00 lets the calculator apply the right rule for your date automatically, so you never have to remember when each region springs forward or falls back.

How do I convert time from one time zone to another?

Find the UTC offset of each zone, then add the difference to the original time. For example, New York in summer is UTC−04:00 and London is UTC+01:00, a five-hour gap — so 9:00 AM in New York is 2:00 PM in London. This calculator does it for you, including the daylight saving adjustment for the exact date you pick.

Does this calculator handle daylight saving time (DST)?

Yes. Because you choose a real location rather than a fixed offset, the calculator applies the daylight saving rules that were actually in effect on the date you enter. That is why the same two cities can be five hours apart in July but only four hours apart in January.

What is the difference between a UTC offset and a time zone?

A UTC offset is just a number, such as UTC−05:00, that tells you how far a clock is from Coordinated Universal Time. A time zone is a region that follows a set of rules, which usually includes switching between a standard offset and a daylight saving offset at set dates. New York, for instance, is UTC−05:00 in winter and UTC−04:00 in summer.

Why is the time difference between two cities not always the same?

Because the two places may start and end daylight saving on different dates — or one may not observe it at all. Arizona and most of Asia keep a fixed offset all year, so the gap between, say, London and Tokyo changes as the UK springs forward and falls back while Japan stays put.
