How the Pool Salt Calculator Works
A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine by passing current through salty water. It only works inside a fairly narrow salinity band — too little salt and it stops producing, too much and it shuts down or corrodes your fittings.
The calculator needs three numbers:
- Pool volume — in US gallons, liters, or cubic meters.
- Current salt level — from a test strip, a digital salt meter, or your generator’s display.
- Target salt level — the figure your equipment’s manual asks for, 3,200 ppm by default.
From there it works out either the weight of salt to add, or — if the water is already saltier than your target — the volume of water to drain and replace.
The Formula
Salt concentration is measured in ppm, parts per million by weight. So the salt needed is simply the weight of the water multiplied by the concentration you want to add:
salt = water weight × (target ppm − current ppm) ÷ 1,000,000
In US units, a gallon of water weighs about 8.34 lb, which gives the shortcut most pool guides quote:
pounds of salt = gallons × 8.34 × (target − current) ÷ 1,000,000
Metric is cleaner, because a liter of water weighs a kilogram:
kilograms of salt = liters × (target − current) ÷ 1,000,000
Both describe the same physics — this calculator runs the metric version internally and converts, which avoids the small rounding error baked into the 8.34 constant.
Worked Example
A 15,000 gallon pool tests at 2,000 ppm. The generator wants 3,200 ppm.
- Difference: 3,200 − 2,000 = 1,200 ppm
- Water weight: 15,000 × 8.34 = 125,100 lb
- Salt needed: 125,100 × 1,200 ÷ 1,000,000 = 150 lb
- Bags: 150 ÷ 40 = 3.75 → 4 bags of 40 lb
Note that you round bags up. Buying four bags overshoots slightly, which is fine — hold the last bag back, retest after 24 hours, and add the remainder only if the reading is still short.

Those figures come from the manufacturers’ own documentation. Other brands — Jandy, CircuPool, Intex and the rest — publish their own numbers, and all of them revise the specification between model years. The manual that came with your unit always wins over a table on the internet.
How to Add Salt to Your Pool
- Test first. Use a test strip or digital meter rather than trusting the generator’s display, which drifts as the cell ages.
- Turn the generator off, but leave the pump running on circulate.
- Broadcast the salt across the shallow end — never pour it into the skimmer, where it can reach the cell and heater in a concentrated slug.
- Brush it around until it dissolves. Salt that sits in a pile on plaster can etch it.
- Circulate for 24 hours, then retest and turn the generator back on.
- Add the remainder only if the new reading is still below target.
Adding too little is easily fixed. Adding too much means draining water, so err low.
What If the Salt Level Is Too High?
There is no chemical that removes salt. It is not consumed by chlorination either — the cell splits sodium chloride into chlorine, which reverts to sodium chloride after it has done its job. The only way down is dilution:
volume to drain = pool volume × (current − target) ÷ current
A 20,000 gallon pool sitting at 4,500 ppm with a 3,200 ppm target needs 20,000 × 1,300 ÷ 4,500 ≈ 5,800 gallons replaced with fresh water, about 29% of the pool.
Drain and refill in stages if you can, and never drain a pool completely without checking your water table — an empty shell can float out of the ground.
Estimating Your Pool Volume
If you do not know your volume, the pool calculator works it out from your pool’s dimensions. To do it by hand, note that depth means average depth: add the shallow and deep ends and divide by two.
- Rectangular: length × width × average depth × 7.48 = gallons
- Round: diameter × diameter × 0.785 × average depth × 7.48 = gallons
- Oval: length × width × 0.785 × average depth × 7.48 = gallons
All dimensions in feet; 7.48 is the number of gallons in a cubic foot. Working in meters, multiply length × width × average depth to get cubic meters, then multiply by 1,000 for liters.
Why Salt Levels Drift
Salt does not evaporate, so a pool that is simply losing water to the sun gets saltier, not less salty. Levels fall when water physically leaves the pool: backwashing the filter, splash-out, leaks, draining after heavy rain, or partial refills. That is why most pools need topping up once or twice a season rather than continuously — and why a sudden drop is worth investigating as a possible leak.
