Fuel Cost Calculator

Calculate the fuel cost of any trip. Enter distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price — get total fuel used and trip cost instantly in any currency.

How Fuel Cost Calculation Works

The calculator converts all inputs to common base units (kilometers and liters), performs the calculation, then displays results in both liters and US gallons:

Distance (km) — if using miles, multiplied by 1.609 to convert to kilometers.

Fuel Efficiency → km/L — all efficiency units are converted to kilometers per liter:

  • mpg (US) → km/L: multiply by 0.4251 (1 mile / 1 US gallon ≈ 1.609 km / 3.785 L)
  • L/100km → km/L: divide 100 by the value
  • L/mi → km/L: divide 1 by (value / 1.609)

Fuel Used (L) = Distance (km) ÷ Fuel Efficiency (km/L)

Fuel Used (US gal) = Fuel Used (L) ÷ 3.785

Total Cost = Fuel Used (L) × Fuel Price (per L)

If the price is entered per gallon, it is first divided by 3.785 to get the price per liter.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Choose the distance unit — kilometers or miles.
  2. Enter the trip distance — results appear as you type.
  3. Check “Round trip” if travelling there and back — distance doubles automatically.
  4. Select your fuel efficiency unit — km/L, mpg (US), L/100km, or L/mi — and enter your vehicle’s value.
  5. Pick a currency and price unit — per liter or per gallon — then enter the current fuel price.
  6. See fuel used and total cost update instantly at the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Multiply the distance by your vehicle's fuel consumption rate, then multiply by the fuel price. The calculator does this automatically: Fuel Used = Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency, then Total Cost = Fuel Used × Fuel Price. Just enter your trip distance, your car's efficiency, and the current fuel price.

What fuel efficiency units are supported?

Four units: kilometers per liter (km/L), miles per gallon US (mpg), liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), and liters per mile (L/mi). The calculator automatically converts between all units internally.

Does it work for round trips?

Yes. Check the 'Round trip (×2)' box to automatically double the distance. The calculator updates all results instantly.

Which currencies are available?

The calculator supports 20 world currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, BRL, CHF, CNY, HKD, INR, JPY, KRW, MXN, NOK, NZD, PLN, SEK, SGD, TWD, and ZAR. Fuel price can be entered per liter or per gallon independently of the currency.

Can I compare costs between two vehicles?

Yes — open the calculator in two browser tabs, enter the different efficiency values for each vehicle, and compare the total costs side by side.
